Current Information:Age-37 6, Clarendon Grove, Mitcham Gorre British & Indian Cemetery, France
On 22nd January, 1917, 1st East Surrey of 95 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into the front line trenches at Givenchy, near Bethune in France where both sides were largely content to live and let live during the bleak winter months. They remained here until relieved on 26th January. On 24th January, a very cold day, the enemy’s artillery was more active than usual and when the British guns replied, two men from the battalion were killed by ‘friendly’ fire. One of those killed was Sidney Holland. |
